March 16, 2020 — COVID-19 Status Update
March 16, 2020
Dear School Community,
As I assume many of you are already aware, Governor Murphy has mandated that all New Jersey public schools will close indefinitely in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
Certainly, this is a situation none of us have dealt with before, and we are working in uncharted territory. However, I have complete confidence, because New Brunswick Public Schools has a terrific team of faculty, staff, and administrators. I deeply appreciate everything you’ve been doing, since I know everyone is juggling professional and personal considerations.
I am sure that through teamwork, we will continue to prepare, empower, and inspire our students during these unsettling times. As our district mission indicates, we will model and “develop creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills to innovate solutions to complex challenges. The entire community will collaborate to create a nurturing environment that allows students to reach these goals.”
Since we’ll be working with our students remotely, I presume everyone involved will have a fascinating educational experience. We will continue to do exactly what we are supposed to do as educators - push boundaries for our students. Teaching and learning shouldn’t stop just because the school buildings are temporarily closed.
I’m proud of the community that assembled to help feed our students today. Incredibly, more than 170 school district employees volunteered this week to ensure that all goes smoothly and none of our students skip a meal.
So, for right now, Monday, March 16, this is where we stand. It’s a challenging, rapidly evolving situation, and I’ll keep you updated regarding new developments. But one thing is certain – by working together, New Brunswick Public Schools will get through this just fine, and we will thrive.
Again, I have a deep appreciation for what you do each and every day. Be safe and take care of your families as well.
Dr. Aubrey A. Johnson
Superintendent of Schools
