May 13, 2022 - Message from the Superintendent: Mask Mandate & Safety Protocols Update

Dear School Community,

Effective Monday, May 16, 2022, New Brunswick Public Schools will reinstate mandatory mask wearing for all students, staff, and visitors while indoors. The rise in the  COVID-19 activity level for our region which considers variables such as the current number of COVID-19 cases, number of hospitalizations, and capacity levels in area hospitals, is now “HIGH.”

Per the New Jersey Department of Education’s  May 9th guidance and after consulting with health professionals the safest precaution at this time is to reinstate mask wearing.

In our April 29th communication, we shared that although mask-wearing would be optional beginning May 2, 2022, should the COVID-19 numbers for the County or district increase, the District may reinstate the mask mandate.  Moving forward, should the COVID-19 cases for the County decrease, the District may decide to make indoor mask-wearing optional.

We ask that you continue to be vigilant in monitoring your health. All other safety protocols including social distancing, testing, and following daily health monitoring procedures remain in place.

As always, we will continue to update you on any further changes to our protocols.

Thank you,

Dr. Aubrey A. Johnson
Superintendent of Schools
