    Core Beliefs:

    The Science Department believes that every student has a right to and is worthy of an excellent Science and STEM learning experience that is guided by the following principles:

    Students and families bring valuable knowledge and skills into the K-12 learning setting, which teachers can elicit to support connections between the real world and Science/ STEM learning in the classroom.

    Effective science teaching engages students science and engineering practices to learn or apply disciplinary core ideas through the lense of cross-cutting concepts to create meaningful learning experiences.

    All students must have access to a high-quality, standards-based curriculum, effective teaching and learning, high expectations, and the support and resources needed to maximize their learning potential.

    Based on relevant phenomena and real world problems, students will engage in individual and collaborative experiences that promote their ability critically think, problem solve, and transfer learning to novel scenarios.

    Assessment shall be used to inform instruction by evaluating student proficiency in scientific practices and content, providing meaningful feedback to students, then designing appropriate instruction to enrich or support student growth

    Educators continue to be professional learners demonstrating the value they place on student ideas, student feedback, and continued professional growth towards standards based instruction and assessment.

    Mission:

    The science department believes that science is a largely collective endeavor as the purpose of science and engineering is to generate solutions to every day problems while answering questions about the world around us. Globally, the field of science must be used to respond to community-based societal needs, as well as global challenges. The science department ultimately seeks to prepare students to ask questions and engage in science; empower students to act as scientists and engineers; and inspire students to pursue continued learning and leadership in STEM to bring new perspectives the the fields of science and engineering.

     

     

    Department Goals:

    K-2 Goal for 2019-2020 School year: 

    Students should be engaged in science and engineering practices in their classroom. Interdisciplinary connections are made explicit for students- science can be used as a context to continue to boost literacy and support the application of math practices.

    3-5 Goal for 2019-2020 School year: 

    Students should be engaged in science and engineering practices in their classroom. Students engage in “3-D” learning by using practices to learn or apply the disciplinary core ideas through the lense of crosscutting concepts. Students should DO the heavy lifting, with support and scaffolds from the teacher facilitating the learning (through questioning strategies- assessing and advancing question’s, peer to peer discussion, labs, engineering design process, text, etc.).

    6-12 Goal for 2019-2020 School year: 

    Instruction and assessments should be 3 dimensional- students are engaged in science and engineering practices to learn or apply disciplinary core ideas through the lens of the cross-cutting concepts. Integrate cross-cutting concept questions as formative assessments in a more explicit way. Instruction should be designed around explaining a phenomena or solving a problem (real world).
