Cell Phone & Electronic Device Policy

In accordance with the Governor’s statewide restrictions on cell phone use in schools, the District has updated its policy to reflect these requirements. This brief provides parents and guardians with an overview of the policy, which is designed to reduce distractions, protect instructional time, and help students remain focused and engaged throughout the school day.

The Rule: Cell Phone Off, Stored, and Not Visible All Day

  • From arrival through dismissal, students may not use personal electronic communication devices except under approved exceptions.
  • This includes cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds/headphones, tablets, cameras, and other devices capable of communicating or recording.
  • Devices must remain powered off, stored, and out of sight throughout the entire school day, including during classes, passing periods, and lunch

  Privacy & Recording

  • Students may not use devices to photograph or record students or staff in violation of District policy.
  • Devices may not be used to communicate, photograph, or record in restrooms, locker rooms, changing areas, or other locations where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Contacting Your Child During the School Day

  • Students who need to contact a parent or guardian should request permission to use the school office.
  • Parents and guardians should contact the school’s main office to reach a student during an emergency.

What Happens If the Policy Is Violated?

  • First violation: Device held until the end of the school day; warning and written documentation; expectations retaught; parent/guardian notified.
  • Second violation: Device held; parent/guardian must retrieve it; after-school detention or equivalent; parent/guardian notified.
  • Third violation: Device held; parent/guardian must retrieve it; digital citizenship reflection; after-school or Saturday detention; parent/guardian conference.
  • Fourth violation: Device held; parent/guardian must retrieve it; in-school suspension; behavior contract; parent/guardian conference.
  • More than four violations: Student is prohibited from bringing an electronic communication device to school or District programs for the remainder of the school year. Additional violations may result in further disciplinary action.

Student Responsibility

  • Students who bring electronic devices to school assume the risk of loss, theft, or damage. The District is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices.

Important: For complete requirements, procedures, and approved exceptions, review Regulation 5516  and Board Policy 5516.
