ESSER Funding

n 2021, the American Rescue Plan (APR) Act was signed into law, providing school districts with APR Elementary and Secondary School Emergency (ESSER) Funds. Funds are provided to State educational agencies and school districts to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools and address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the Nation’s students.

New Brunswick Public Schools utilized these funds to address the following needs:

  • Academic support programs were offered outside of school hours by certified teachers
    • Aimed at providing literacy, mathematics, and science support
    • Assisted students in reaching educational goals and enhancing learning progress
    • Designed to help students attain learning standards in an accessible and encouraging manner
  • Individualized literacy instruction was provided to students below grade level
    • Focused on targeted literacy instruction to address specific needs
  • Summer Enrichment Programs
    • Focused on project-based learning and foundational skill-building in mathematics and reading
    • Offered opportunities for students in Grades 9-12 to recover high school credits required for graduation
    • Provided avenues for students to earn credits for accelerated learning
  • Mental health services and support
    • Available to staff, students, and families
    • Included social-emotional learning opportunities
  • Content-focused coaching
    • Aiming to maximize the instructional coach's role in supporting teachers
    • Focused on content and pedagogy improvement in ELA, mathematics, and science
  • Centralized and remote registration process
    • Ensured continuity in new student registrations through remote methods
  • Improve and upgrade HVAC systems district-wide
  • Purchase of PPE equipment
  • Purchase of Chromebooks, mobile hotspots for students as a part of the District’s 1:1 initiative
