• The New Brunswick Health Sciences Technology High School serves as an exemplar for those with a vision toward creating viable educational opportunities for urban youth. The product of a partnership with the New Brunswick Board of Education, Innovative Educational Programs LLC, and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the New Brunswick Health Sciences Technology High School was designed to prepare our youth for the challenges of a career in medicine and health care. The school is located in close proximity to such prominent healthcare institutions as the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the Bristol Myers-Squibb Children’s Hospital, the P.S.E.G. Children’s Specialized Hospital and the headquarters of Johnson & Johnson.

A small learning community, the school has a competitive admission process and once accepted, students are expected to maintain a 3.0 grade point average (G.P.A.), abide by the approved school uniform dress code, and maintain regular school attendance. Our mission is to “Prepare” students with the academic and ethical skills necessary for success in this rapidly evolving field through a course of study that is focused on math, the sciences and the humanities. All core courses are offered on an Honors or Advanced Placement level. The sequentially developed course of study exceeds state requirements for graduation and includes four years of instruction in math and science, and three years of instruction in a World Language. Advanced Placement courses are currently offered in Language and Composition, Literature and Composition, Calculus, Chemistry and Biology. Through our ongoing partnerships with Rutgers University and Middlesex County College, our students also have the opportunity to earn college credits prior to graduation.

In addition to the academic focus, every student learns about the world of health sciences via career awareness seminars, service learning projects, career shadowing experiences, and semester long internships at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. A local hospice and assisted living community provide exposure to other healthcare facilities to further broaden our students' experiences. Throughout the year, selected students have opportunities to participate in programs with the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Rutgers Medical School, the State Theatre of New Jersey as well as others. It is through these academic and experiential learning opportunities that we “Empower” our students to better determine their career interests and paths and develop the social and networking skills requisite for practicing professionals.

Community service is an integral component of school life. Students are required to acquire fifty (50) hours of community service, yet the majority of them exceed these hours. Students volunteer at health fairs, Ciclovia, fundraising walks, Family Nights, at their faith-based institution, Special Olympics and the local soup kitchen among many other activities.

Our parents are an invaluable source of support to our students, the administration, faculty and staff. They ensure that our students attend school regularly, prepared to learn. They communicate with school staff, sharing information about their students, and seeking assistance from staff when needed. They enforce the Student Code of Conduct that contributes to our safe learning environment. They take pride in the accomplishments of their students. Our parents and the greater New Brunswick community “Inspire” our students to become good people as well as good students.

Graduates of the New Brunswick Health Sciences Technology High School are accepted into and attend prestigious public and private universities and colleges including the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy of Rutgers University, Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, Amherst College, New York University, Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, the College of New Jersey, University of Pennsylvania, St. Peter’s University, Columbia University, Vassar College, Penn State University, La Salle University and the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The 35 members of the Class of 2016 were awarded $4.9 million in merit-based scholarships. Fully half of our graduates have enrolled or completed studies in professional health care programs. More than 60 graduates are currently employed at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

The visibility of our students as they travel in their school uniforms throughout New Brunswick and of our graduates in their scrubs in the corridors of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital serves as credible evidence that the school’s mission, “To prepare young adults for the challenges of a career in medicine and health care” is being fulfilled.
