Dear School Community,

I am pleased to say that in the classrooms of New Brunswick Public Schools, we are taking the steps necessary to ensure that our students are expressing ideas and opinions respectfully, and also listening attentively to fully understand what someone else says. Students are accountable to academic accuracy by defending their ideas and thoughts that are based on tangible, accurate facts. More so, in small pockets, I have witnessed our students demonstrate intellectual rigor, which means they are utilizing accurate information to build a logical argument based only on solid evidence.

In some classrooms, we are establishing a higher bar and our teachers and students are responding to it.  Students are expressing their thinking verbally and in writing across all contents.  Teachers are analyzing students work to determine how students are reasoning and defending their claims. This allows teachers to assess and advance learning without taking away the student’s process of thinking.

This approach is extremely valuable in preparing our students for college-level studies, where factual accuracy is the very cornerstone of both instruction and learning.  It’s a significant step forward for our school district and the students it serves. By incorporating these strategies into our daily practice and curriculum, we position the students of New Brunswick Public Schools to be far more effective consumers of information and learning.

Keep on moving forward in preparing our students to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Together we will Prepare, Empower and Inspire our students to be lifelong learners and leaders.

Lastly, I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!  Enjoy
